Bulletin No. 38 – Cotopaxi volcano situation 08/10/2015

Status: Yellow alert
Volcano status: In eruptive process
Internal activity: Moderate
Surface activity: Moderate
At night, the volcano was clear, allowing to observe vapor and gas emissions with low ash content. These reached a height of up to 2.000 meters above the crater and went between the northwest and southwest. Ashfall was reported in the areas of El Chasqui and San Ramón in the province of Cotopaxi. No rains or lahars were reported. According to the Special Report No. 19, of October 7, the more likely is that ash emissions, followed by small explosions occur. During this type of activity, it could be observed incandescence (brightness) in the crater and secondary lahars could generate, but that would not affect populated areas; these would remain in the area of the Cotopaxi National Park.
